Virginia Railway Express Ridership Soars During Metro Repairs

Last week's 100,000-plus riders is a record for VRE.

An extensive overhaul is underway for Metro, and folks looking for alternatives apparently have turned to the Virginia Railway Express. The commuting service with stops across Northern Virginia has seen ridership substantially increase, according to a release.

How substantially? VRE reports that on July 12, it had its highest single-day ridership — with 23,309 individual trips.

And VRE went over the 100,000-rider mark last week — another record.

“It’s been exciting to introduce a whole new group of people to VRE and to get their feedback on our service,” VRE Director of Rail Operations Chris Henry said in the release. “We’re pleased to hear their satisfaction with our on-time performance, rail-car restrooms, helpful staff and the comfortable, safe and easy ride to and from work, because that’s what we strive for every day.

"It’s our hope that some of these riders continue to utilize VRE and integrate us into their regular travel routine.”
