Weis Markets To Close Spotsylvania Store Next Month: Report

Weis Markets will close its store in Breezewood Shopping Center on Feb. 13, the Free Lance-Star reported.

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — Weis Markets plans to close a store in Spotsylvania County next month, only three months after it closed another one of its Fredericksburg area stores, according to a report. Weis Markets will close its store in Breezewood Shopping Center on Feb. 13, the Free Lance-Star reported Tuesday.

In 2016, Weis Markets bought 38 Food Lion supermarket locations in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware in 2016 from Delhaize Group, Food Lion's parent company. Both the Breezwood Shopping Center location and the store on Route 17 that closed in November were former Food Lion stores that were converted to Weis Markets.

Weis Markets has invested very little in any of its Virginia stores, Jeffery Metzger, editor of the trade publication Food World, told the Free Lance-Star.

Metzger doubts another grocery store will move into Weis Market's location in the Breezewood Shopping Center, according to the report. The Fredericksburg area is "overstored" by places that sell groceries, he told the newspaper.
