FREDERICKSBURG, VA — While New Year’s Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, it’s good to know how the holiday may affect the availability of services in Fredericksburg.

New Year’s Day and New Year's Eve are a few of the holidays that usually affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Fredericksburg.

To help you plan, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on New Year’s Day in our city:

  • City of Fredericksburg government offices: Closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Trash collection: Trash and recycling collection will not be affected by the holiday.
  • Libraries: All Central Rappahannock Regional Library locations will close at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec.31 and will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Courts: All courts in the area will be closed on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • VRE: The VRE will not operate on Friday, Dec. 31 or Saturday, Jan. 1.
  • Metro: On Dec. 31, Metrobus operates on a Saturday schedule, while Metrorail operates on a weekday schedule. Both services operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.
  • Post offices: Some locations may have limited hours on Dec. 31. Check with your local post office. All post offices are closed on Jan. 1.
