FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Another year has come and gone. In the Fredericksburg area, government facilities and offices will close to allow their workers an extra day off to start the year.

This year, New Year's Day falls on a Sunday. Many government offices and other facilities will remain closed on Monday, Jan. 2 to recognize the occasion.

  • Government offices in Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania: Closed on Monday, Jan. 2.
  • Public schools in Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania: Closed on Monday, Jan. 2. Students in Fredericksburg return on Jan. 3. Stafford students return on Jan. 5. Spotsylvania students return on Jan. 5.
  • Trash collection: Trash and recycling collection in Fredericksburg will not be affected by the holiday.
  • Courts: All courts in the area will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles: DMV service centers will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2.
  • Fredericksburg SPCA: The SPCA shelter will be closed on Dec. 31, Jan. 1, and Jan. 2.
  • VRE: There will be no VRE service on Saturday, Dec. 31 or Sunday, Jan. 1.
  • Post offices: Some locations may have limited hours on Dec. 31. Check with your local post office. All post offices are closed on Monday, Jan. 2.
  • Libraries: All branches of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library will be closed from Dec. 31 through Jan. 2. They will open again on Jan. 3.
