Wintry Mix Lurks Again: Northern Virginia Work Week Weather

STERLING, VA—Now that the wintry mix unpleasantness of Sunday is on its way out of the Northern Virginia area, the work week is a mixed bag. That's the word from various weather outlets, including our very own National Weather Service outlet in Sterling.

Monday, for example, should be sunny. However, according to the Washingon Post's Capital Weather Gang, "What we lack in snow, we tend to make up in cold wind around here. This is a day full of the latter. Skies are mostly sunny but temperatures ranging from about 33 to 39 won’t feel so great, especially when paired up with winds sustained as high as 20 mph or so."

And the rest of the week? Forecasters call for more freezing rain Tuesday night. And as we know in these parts, changing patterns always could open the door for snow. Expect low temperatures below freezing for much of the week. Here's the detailed forecast from the National Weather Service:

Monday: A slight chance of snow showers before 10am. Sunny, with a high near 34. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tonight: Increasing clouds, with a low around 26. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night: A chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Rain, freezing rain, and sleet, becoming all rain after 1pm. High near 47. East wind around 7 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Wednesday Night: Rain likely before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 24.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 42.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33.

Saturday: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Saturday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 40. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
