Woman Faces Charges After Assault, Altercation With Stafford Deputy

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A 35-year-old woman faces multiple charges after authorities said she assaulted a person, stole the victim's phone and later kicked a Stafford County sheriff's deputy during her arrest early Thursday near Fredericksburg.

Stafford County sheriff's deputies responded just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday, to a disturbance at Motel 6 located at 401 Warrenton Road. Investigators said Laura Taylor, 35, of Washington, D.C., had threatened the victim before pushing and striking the person and taking their phone.

Deputies observed marks on the victim, and witnesses corroborated the victim's account, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Suspect Accused Of Kicking Deputy During Arrest

When deputies contacted Taylor, authorities said she showed signs of impairment, including glassy eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol on her breath.

Taylor resisted while deputies were taking her into custody and kicked a deputy as she was being placed in a patrol vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office reported Taylor was charged with grand larceny, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, assault and battery, obstructing justice and public intoxication.

Court records provide additional details and show six cases stemming from the Sept. 17 incident. They include felony charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer and larceny, as well as misdemeanor assault and battery, resisting or obstructing with threat or force, fleeing from law enforcement and public intoxication.

The court records differ slightly from the sheriff's office account. The sheriff's office described the theft charge as grand larceny, while the court docket lists the charge under Virginia Code § 18.2-95 as "steal property: $5+ pick pocket." The court records also show a separate misdemeanor charge of fleeing from law enforcement that was not listed in the sheriff's office summary.

Taylor's address is listed as Fort Washington, Maryland, in the Stafford General District Court records, while the sheriff's office identified her as being from Washington, D.C.

Court records show Taylor remained in custody on five of the cases as of Friday. The public intoxication case separately lists her as released on summons. No disposition has been entered in the cases.

An attorney review is scheduled for Sept. 24, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Stafford General District Court.
