1. A new indoor rec center? Passenger rail in Harrisonburg? (hburgcitizen.com) — Harrisonburg residents could soon see a new indoor recreation complex in the former Artisan Packaging building, offering sports like climbing, basketball, and pickleball. City council also advanced a ban on Flock license-plate cameras and backed efforts to bring passenger rail service to Harrisonburg, while approving several other planning, budget, and housing measures.
2. A reward is offered in a brandishing investigation in Harrisonburg (theriver953.com) — Harrisonburg police are seeking help identifying a man who allegedly brandished what appeared to be a black AR-style rifle at an August 23 party on the 1300 block of South Main Street. Newly released images show a shorter white male with a mop-style haircut, and anyone with information can contact HPD or Crime Solvers for a possible reward.
3. Harrisonburg Farmers Market recovers following storm last Saturday (rocktownnow.com) — Harrisonburg's farmers market is reopening Saturday at 8 a.m. after last weekend's intense thunderstorm damaged tents, produce, and merchandise but thankfully caused no injuries. Manager Sarah Gorman says vendors are pursuing insurance claims and hoping strong turnout will help recover financial losses from what longtime participants call the worst market weather in three decades.
4. JMU Celebrates Grand Reopening of Carrier Library (whsv.com) — Harrisonburg residents now have access to a fully renovated, nearly 200,000-square-foot Carrier Library at JMU, which just celebrated its grand reopening. The modernized space offers books, media, tech services, study rooms, and now houses the nationally significant Furious Flower Poetry Center, giving students and community members a much-expanded hub for learning and culture.
5. Expanded testing facilities to help livestock producers (pagevalleynews.com) — Harrisonburg's Regional Animal Health Laboratory is being expanded as part of a statewide project to better protect Virginia's livestock and poultry industries, especially Rockingham County's massive poultry sector. The $13.1 million upgrade will add modern diagnostic space, drive-through sample drop-off, and enhanced disease monitoring, helping local farmers safeguard their flocks and herds and supporting the broader rural economy.
