1. Harrisonburg City Council honors former Harrisonburg Mayor Rodney Eagle (rocktownnow.com) — Harrisonburg City Council has formally honored the late former mayor and councilmember Rodney Eagle, recognizing his years of service and leadership to the city. During last night's meeting, Mayor Deanna Reed read a proclamation praising his dedication to residents and expressing the city's gratitude to his family. The council highlighted Eagle's multiple terms and lasting impact on Harrisonburg's civic life.
2. Council plans to ask US Forest Service to keep 'roadless rule' (hburgcitizen.com) — Harrisonburg City Council is backing protections on Shenandoah Mountain, supporting passenger rail's return, and permanently banning automated license plate readers, while also reallocating ARPA funds and endorsing new battery storage agreements. Council members reviewed survey results guiding downtown planting priorities and upcoming beautification projects. These decisions shape local water quality, privacy, transportation options, and how downtown will look and feel for residents.
3. Harrisonburg pet care business seeks help after financial difficulty (dnronline.com) — A Harrisonburg pet care business, Paws of Hope, is asking for community help after storms, health issues, and a kennel cough outbreak strained its finances and forced a daycare closure. Owners John and Amy Sheppard have already seen thousands donated through GoFundMe. They continue caring for rescue animals and clients' pets while hoping local support will stabilize the business.
4. Student, 9, found with knife in his desk at Berkeley Glenn Elementary in Waynesboro (whsv.com) — Waynesboro school officials quickly secured a knife found in a 9-year-old's desk at Berkeley Glenn Elementary after another student reported the concern, and police are reviewing possible charges. The incident follows two other recent weapons cases in Waynesboro schools, including a false bomb threat allegedly made by a Harrisonburg teenager to Westwood Hills Elementary earlier this month.
5. Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services speaks to Page County Farm Bureau (dnronline.com) — State agriculture commissioner Charles Green highlighted an ongoing expansion at the Harrisonburg state animal lab while speaking to Page County farmers about drought relief, grants, and new beef labeling programs. He also encouraged local youth to pursue science-based internships in those labs and noted new funding for invasive species and predator control work.
