Harrisonburg nonprofit highlights support, advocacy, and education efforts for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (whsv.com) — A Harrisonburg nonprofit, First Step: A Response to Domestic Violence, is using Domestic Violence Awareness Month to remind local survivors and families that confidential help is available around the clock. The group offers shelter, advocacy, education, and a 24/7 hotline at 540-434-0295 for anyone in the Shenandoah Valley facing physical, emotional, or financial abuse or worried about a loved one.
2. Traffic delays in the Shenandoah Valley – Week of October 5, 2026 (rocktownnow.com) — Expect lane closures and detours on I-81, Route 11, Route 33, and other key corridors in and around Harrisonburg this week as VDOT continues widening, paving, and bridge work. Plan extra time, especially near city limits and major interchanges, and watch for changing traffic patterns and reduced speed limits in work zones.
3. Mountaineers soccer faced first defeat in seven weeks against James Madison (theappalachianonline.com) — James Madison University handed App State women's soccer its first loss of the season in Harrisonburg, winning 3–1 and snapping the Mountaineers' 10-game unbeaten streak. The match at JMU saw the Dukes dominate second-half chances, with two goals from forward Ginny Lackey and a lone App State reply before the hosts quickly restored their two-goal cushion.
4. Drought warning lifted in Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Winchester (nvdaily.com) — Harrisonburg remains under a drought warning advisory even as nearby Shenandoah County and Winchester are downgraded to a drought watch thanks to recent rain. State officials say streamflows and soil moisture are still low in central Virginia, and hundreds of public water systems face voluntary or mandatory restrictions while they monitor conditions into the new water year.
5. Shenandoah Valley still the fastest-growing area in Virginia (dnronline.com) — New population estimates show the Winchester metro still leads Virginia in growth, but Harrisonburg isn't far behind, posting a 3.5% increase since 2020. Analysts say younger, higher-income residents and remote workers are helping drive migration to more affordable Shenandoah Valley communities, even as some people move farther out in search of lower housing costs.
