Herndon Police Announce Locust Street Closure, Middle School Detour (patch.com) — Locust Street in Herndon was closed Monday morning between Elden/Sterling and Fifth after a damaged power line, forcing drivers to detour around the area. Police advised families heading to Herndon Middle School to use Elden Street and Grace Street instead, with repairs expected to take several hours and no firm reopening time announced yet.
2. Fierce competition expected for I-395 transportation funds in N. Va. (arlnow.com) — Herndon is eligible to compete this fall for a share of up to $50 million in I-395/95 Commuter Choice funds that support transit and congestion-relief projects. Local governments and transit agencies can apply between Oct. 19 and Dec. 18, with selected projects potentially improving commuting options and traffic for Herndon-area residents as early as next July.
3. Ban on boat, trailer parking approved for some Dranesville District roads (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax County has approved a new community parking district in Dranesville that bans boats, RVs, large trailers, and other heavy vehicles from many neighborhood streets, but the Town of Herndon is specifically excluded. Still, nearby residents may notice stricter rules just outside town limits, as supporters and critics debate whether the changes address real safety and parking concerns.
4. Lt. Gov. Hashmi directly opposes proposed Dominion-NextEra merger (dailypress.com) — Herndon's Del. Irene Shin pressed a NextEra executive about releasing a document tied to election-related allegations as Virginia leaders scrutinize the proposed Dominion–NextEra merger. Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi came out against the deal, citing high energy costs and risks for ratepayers, while the companies tout bill credits, job promises, and customer protections.
5. Aventra Raises $17.5 Million to Scale Piranha Defense System (citybiz.co) — Aventra Defense Systems is expanding its Herndon manufacturing capacity after raising $17.5 million to scale up its Piranha autonomous payload system. The company plans to add engineering and operations jobs locally as it shifts from testing to larger-scale production for U.S. and allied military customers.
