FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A driver and a passenger died early Sunday in a fiery single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened around 2:17 a.m. Sunday on I-95 northbound at the exit to Route 286, also known as the Fairfax County Parkway, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, struck about 75 feet of guardrail, hit a tree and then traveled about 50 feet down an embankment, according to state police. The vehicle also caught fire.
Bystanders were able to rescue a passenger from the vehicle, police said. That passenger was taken to an area hospital.
The driver and a second passenger died at the scene, according to police.
The crash remains under investigation.
