Applications Open for 2027 VCE Loudoun Extension Master Gardener Training Class

Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Loudoun is now accepting applications for its 2027 Extension Master Gardener training class. Residents who want to make a difference in their community, help protect the environment and connect with fellow gardeners are encouraged to apply by Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Extension Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who promote environmentally sound horticulture practices through sustainable landscape management education. Working through the VCE Loudoun office, they share research-based horticultural and environmental information from Virginia Tech and Virginia State University with Loudoun residents.

VCE Loudoun Master Gardener volunteers answer gardening questions through the Help Desk and Garden Clinics, maintain a Demonstration and Teaching Garden at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, and provide outreach at community events. As environmental stewards, they advise on the safe and appropriate use of pesticides and fertilizers as well as lead education programs on lawns, trees and shrubs, home food crops, and ornamental plants. Volunteer opportunities include the Demonstration Garden, Children's Education Team, Gravel Bed Project, Site Assessments, Garden Clinics and Help Desk.

A background in horticulture is helpful but not required. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about giving back to the community, can commit to completing a 75-hour internship and annual requirements, and can make a three- to five-year volunteer commitment after certification.

Applications are submitted online through the Better Impact volunteer system and must be completed in one sitting. Applicants will need to provide two personal references. Applications are considered in the order received, with priority given to Loudoun County residents, and the application process will close once the class reaches capacity.

Beginning in late October, applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview, either in person or by Zoom. A panel of VCE Loudoun Master Gardener volunteers and the VCE Loudoun Master Gardener Coordinator will select trainees based on their enthusiasm to learn, willingness to volunteer and interest in promoting environmentally sound practices. Accepted applicants must also pass a background screening. Class registration opens in January, and classes begin in late January. The 2027 class fee is $235, which covers state program fees, an electronic copy of the 600-page Extension Master Gardener Handbook, instructor fees, materials and a T-shirt.
