Pedestrian Dies In Early Morning Crash In Lorton: Police

The driver was traveling northbound on Route 1 in the rain and struck the man who was not in a crosswalk.

LORTON, VA — A crash that killed a pedestrian Tuesday morning closed parts of Route 1 in Lorton, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Detectives from the police department's Crash Reconstruction Unit arrived at the scene at Route 1 and Giles Run Road to investigate the death.

The police closed northbound lanes of Route 1 and one southbound lane after the crash. The police diverted traffic during the investigation. The lanes were reopened shortly after 6 a.m.

Detectives from the Fairfax police's Crash Reconstruction Unit have preliminarily determined that the man was crossing Richmond Highway near the intersection of Giles Run Road. The driver of a 2012 Hyundai Elantra was traveling northbound on Richmond Highway in the rain and struck the man who was not in a crosswalk. The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with detectives.

The man was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. This is the fifth pedestrian fatality in Fairfax County to date in 2020.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor for the driver and speed is still under investigation, according to the police. Detectives have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian, the department said.

Identification of the pedestrian is pending the notification of next of kin.
