1. Lynchburg, VA, Fire Department Names First Female Deputy Chief (firehouse.com) — Lynchburg's fire department has appointed Abbey Johnston as its first female deputy chief, overseeing administration and two newly created HR and training roles approved by the city. Johnston, a former LFD captain and Bedford County fire leader, is the first major hire under new Fire Chief Brad Creasy and will help guide upcoming recruitment and department-wide training changes.
2. Man arrested for drunk in public, robbery at Dollar General in Lynchburg: Police (wset.com) — Lynchburg police say a 30-year-old city resident was arrested Tuesday after a robbery at the Dollar General on Memorial Avenue, where an employee reported a man stole merchandise using an edged weapon. Officers quickly identified the suspect, charged him with robbery and drunk in public, and are asking anyone with additional information to contact LPD or Crime Stoppers.
3. Lynchburg council members question Flock surveillance contract, call for warrant requirements (wsls.com) — Lynchburg City Council members are pushing to revisit the city's contract with Flock Safety, questioning whether police should need a warrant to search license plate reader data. Several councilors say the system's scope has grown beyond what was approved, and they plan to debate possible warrant rules or even canceling the agreement at the August 25 meeting.
4. Lynchburg Regional Airport lands $8M federal grant for terminal expansion (wsls.com) — Lynchburg Regional Airport has secured an $8 million federal grant to expand and modernize its passenger terminal, tackling crowding and accessibility issues that affect local travelers. Planned upgrades include a redesigned TSA exit lane and a new ADA-compliant elevator, with officials promising more details soon on construction timing and any impacts to flights.
5. Love Heals to hold Lynchburg Cares benefit concert (newsadvance.com) — A Lynchburg-based nonprofit, Love Heals, is hosting a free benefit concert featuring indie pop band Oceanic at the University of Lynchburg's Dell on Friday, Sept. 4, with gates opening at 6 p.m. Donations and a share of concessions will support Lynchburg Cares, the university's crisis fund that helps faculty, staff, and students facing emergency financial needs.
