Lynchburg Field Notes: Give feedback on a major intersection overhaul at an upcoming open house (cardinalnews.org) — Lynchburg residents are invited to an open house Thursday to review and comment on a $90 million overhaul of the U.S. 501/221 intersection, the city's busiest. This roundup also flags applications for a new nonprofit training course, a leadership change at the Lynchburg Fire Department, a survey on the city's comprehensive plan, and a national award for Lynchburg Water Resources.
2. Liberty University move-in day kicks off with thousands of new students (wsls.com) — Thousands of new students are streaming into Liberty University in Lynchburg as move-in day kicks off, filling residence halls and bringing a surge of activity to campus and nearby neighborhoods. With about 4,800 new undergrads and roughly 9,500 students living on campus, Liberty expects total enrollment, including online programs, to reach around 167,000 this fall.
3. Lynchburg City Council members weigh in on LPD decision to pause use of Flock cameras (wfxrtv.com) — Lynchburg Police have temporarily shut off all 15 Flock license plate cameras while an outside review of the surveillance program and department policies is arranged. City council members are split, with one arguing council—not police—should decide Flock's fate and others applauding the pause as a win for privacy. The review's scope, cost, and duration are still being worked out with city staff.
4. 10 Virginia Train Stations That Have Been Turned Into Hotels And Restaurants (myfamilytravels.com) — Lynchburg readers get a spotlight on The Virginian Hotel, a restored Beaux-Arts landmark downtown that now offers upscale dining and rooftop views while preserving its rail-era grandeur. It's featured among several historic Virginia train stations and rail-related buildings that have been transformed into hotels, restaurants, museums, and event venues celebrating the state's railroad heritage.
5. Glenvar reloads for 2026 season as key veterans return to lead Highlanders (wset.com) — Lynchburg-area fans will see Glenvar open its 2026 football season against LCA on August 28, with the Highlanders aiming to stay atop the Three Rivers District. Returning star running back Ranger Swanson and several veteran leaders give Glenvar confidence it can reload, not rebuild, despite key graduations. Coaches say expectations remain high as camp competition heats up.
