1. FAA Spends Nearly $1.5B on Airport Upgrades in August (flyingmag.com) — Lynchburg Regional Airport is getting an $8 million federal grant to expand its passenger terminal, improve flow through security, and boost capacity for future growth. City officials say the project will add an automated TSA exit lane plus sustainability and accessibility upgrades, as part of a larger $1.5 billion FAA push to modernize airports nationwide.
2. Cameras paused, programs halted and cables cut: The flock and license plate reader debate across Southwest Virginia (wsls.com) — Lynchburg police have temporarily taken all 15 of their fixed license plate reader cameras offline in response to community feedback and concerns about public trust. The department says the technology has helped find missing people and stolen cars, while nearby Roanoke and Christiansburg continue their own debates over Flock cameras, vandalism, and privacy protections.
3. Estate gift establishes new endowed fund in Lynchburg (newsadvance.com) — A $1.5 million estate gift is creating a new endowed fund at the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation to support nonprofits and scholarships serving the Lynchburg area and Central Virginia. The Mary Sue Harner Fund will provide permanent annual support for five local charities and students, joining more than 300 existing funds that already aid residents across Lynchburg and nearby counties.
4. Liberty law starts new year with record enrollment (newsadvance.com) — Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg is starting the year with its largest-ever enrollment, nearly 350 students, and a series of faith-centered welcome events. New 1Ls attended a professionalism ceremony, a special Convocation, and a Bench & Bar Reception that connected them with Lynchburg-area judges, attorneys, and Commonwealth's Attorney Bethany Harrison for networking and mentorship.
