📰 News we're reading

• Evington firefighter remembered as dedicated public servant during memorial service (wset.com) — Lynchburg hosted a memorial at Thomas Road Baptist Church for 22-year-old Evington firefighter Joshua Warren Jennings, remembered as a devoted first responder, fiancé, and community member. Family, friends, and fellow firefighters shared how he lived at the firehouse when off work, earned Firefighter of the Year honors, and left a gap the department says can never be fully filled, while a GoFundMe supports his parents.

• How a failed project could help solve the world's biggest energy need (spokesman.com) — A long-idle, $400 million test reactor facility at Liberty University in Lynchburg is getting a second life as a proving ground for next-generation small nuclear reactors aimed at powering energy-hungry data centers. Start-up Applied Atomics and BWXT hope this Lynchburg-based project can finally make compact reactors commercially viable, though experts warn costs, safety, and waste storage remain big hurdles.

• Virginia sheriff suspending Flock camera use (pilotonline.com subscription) — Lynchburg is among several Virginia localities that have paused use of Flock license plate reader cameras amid privacy and legal concerns, now joined by Goochland County. While Richmond continues using 99 cameras, Goochland's sheriff stressed there was no local misuse but said community input and constitutional worries drove the suspension. Lynchburg residents may see similar debates over balancing safety and privacy.
