1. Lynchburg offers cooling centers during heat wave week (wdbj7.com) — Lynchburg is opening free, air-conditioned cooling centers this week as temperatures push into the 90s with triple-digit heat indices, offering bottled water and relief during the hottest hours. Residents are urged to check the city's website for specific locations and hours, follow state health tips to avoid heat illness, and take extra care to keep pets safe and hydrated.
2. UVA Health Bringing Comprehensive Cancer Care to Lynchburg (uvahealth.com) — UVA Health is opening a new cancer clinic at 103 Clifton Street in Lynchburg this fall, bringing most standard oncology treatments much closer to home for local patients. The center, tied to UVA's National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, will reduce trips to Charlottesville, expand existing UVA services in town, and begin hiring staff later this month.
3. Lynchburg City Schools students face low Standard of Learning scores and high economic disadvantage rates (wsls.com) — Lynchburg City Schools are grappling with low SOL scores and the reality that about two-thirds of students are considered economically disadvantaged. Parents and city leaders link financial stress and mental health to academic struggles, and a joint city–school work session next week will focus on strategies to support students and raise achievement.
4. Univ. of Lynchburg sees 20% growth in undergraduate enrollment, largest class since 2018 (wset.com) — Undergraduate enrollment at the University of Lynchburg has jumped 20%, bringing 502 new students to campus and marking the school's largest incoming class since 2018. Leaders say the growth, including in key graduate programs, strengthens the university's future in Lynchburg and expands options for local teachers and professionals seeking advanced degrees.
