Serving Lynchburg City and surrounding counties, it connects grandparents, relatives, and family friends with resources to keep kids in safe, stable homes. 2. Back to School on Main Street brings shoppers and deals to downtown Lynchburg (wset.com) — Downtown Lynchburg shops are rolling out one-day-only back-to-school deals on Main Street this Saturday, celebrating the end of construction and inviting residents to come early for the best selection. Participating stores like Threaded Collective, LaneyKickz, Firebrick Pottery, and Frost and Fire are offering special discounts to help you support local businesses while refreshing your wardrobe and school supplies.
3. SNAP benefit theft surges in Lynchburg, with more than $60,000 reported stolen in August (wset.com) — Lynchburg families using SNAP are seeing a sharp spike in stolen EBT benefits, with reported losses jumping from about $1,500 in June to over $60,000 in August. City social services and Lynchburg Police are investigating while urging residents to lock cards, monitor balances, switch to chip-enabled cards, and contact their worker or police immediately if funds vanish so they can access local food resources.
4. Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Calls on Community to Take Action Against Hunger in September (royalexaminer.com) — Lynchburg residents are being asked to step up for Hunger Action Month as the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank faces record demand across western and central Virginia. With a major distribution center in Lynchburg, the organization says even small donations or volunteer shifts can translate into thousands of meals for neighbors. Locals are also encouraged to advocate for hunger-relief policies and wear orange on Sept. 29.
5. Lynchburg firefighters help deliver baby during unexpected home birth (wset.com) — Lynchburg firefighters recently helped a local family deliver their baby boy at home after labor progressed too quickly for a hospital trip, turning an emergency call into a joyful surprise. The Basels later reunited with the Lynchburg Fire Department crew to thank them, describing a lasting bond formed through the unexpected birth and safe trip to the hospital afterward.
