1. VDOT Lynchburg District Traffic Alert September 28-October 4, 2026 (virginia.gov) — Drivers in Lynchburg should prepare for lane closures and night work on Route 460 bridges, the Candlers Mountain Road/Business 29 interchange, and the Wards Ferry Road–CVCC Campus Drive roundabout area from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. Expect reduced lane widths, detours, and flagging operations, and plan extra travel time or alternate routes, especially near Harvard Street and Wards Road.
2. Lynchburg leaders plan transit expansion as demand grows (wset.com) — Lynchburg officials are planning to expand regional rail service and build support for new Chicago and Washington, D.C. flights as train and air travel out of the city surge. With ridership up 13% and daily airport passengers jumping from 250 to 400, leaders say better transit options could save residents money, attract more visitors, and boost local businesses and jobs.
3. Congratulations to the Winner of the Central Virginia St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway (iheart.com) — A Lynchburg couple has won the 2026 Central Virginia St. Jude Dream Home, a newly built $700,000 house in the Blackwater Run neighborhood off Rivermont Avenue. Their good fortune capped a sold-out ticket campaign that raised $1.6 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, with Roanoke/Lynchburg media partners helping bring in more than $8.5 million over eight years.
4. Virginia designates White Rock Elementary as historic landmark (newsadvance.com) — White Rock Elementary School in Lynchburg has been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register, opening the door to valuable historic tax credits for renovating the former school. Working with Lynchburg-based Dominion 7 Architects and preservation consultants, the city aims to transform the building into an upgraded community hub while tapping state and federal funding tools to ease local costs.
5. Lawmakers push act to compensate SNAP theft victims (wfxrtv.com) — Lynchburg residents recently learned that more than $60,000 in SNAP benefits were stolen from local EBT cards, prompting federal and state leaders to back stronger protections. A new SNAP Anti-Theft and Victim Compensation Act and upgraded 'chip-and-tap' EBT cards, which will be mailed to Lynchburg families, aim to reduce fraud and better safeguard food assistance for vulnerable households.
