1. Lynchburg schools' $9M in state funding set to upgrade HVAC, electric and new gyms (wset.com) — Three Lynchburg elementary schools—R.S. Payne, Heritage, and Sandusky—are set to share $9 million in state funding for HVAC, electrical, and new gym upgrades, easing pressure on city taxpayers. The work will replace aging systems, fix water damage, and create dedicated gym spaces, with school leaders emphasizing how better facilities can directly improve students' ability to learn.
2. New school performance data highlights Lynchburg's strengths and weaknesses (wset.com) — Newly released state data shows most Lynchburg schools still need intensive support, even though 11 of 15 improved their scores this year. Local leaders say boosting student growth will require community-wide effort, and Lynchburg City Schools will explain the results and next steps at the Oct. 20 school board meeting, where residents can hear how their schools are responding.
3. University of Lynchburg to launch online counseling master's programs (newsadvance.com) — The University of Lynchburg is launching fully online master's programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling starting January 2027, mirroring its existing in-person degrees. Local and remote students will complete intensive clinical training and meet Virginia licensure requirements, expanding access to counseling education and helping address mental health needs in underserved areas, including parts of southwestern Virginia.
4. Liberty University among institutions considered for new Corps of Cadets program (wsls.com) — Liberty University in Lynchburg is being considered for a new Corps of Cadets program that could elevate it to a Distinguished Military College, potentially reshaping its role in officer training. Federal defense leaders say they want more officers grounded in constitutional and Western-civilization principles, and Liberty's president says the opportunity aligns with the school's long-standing military focus.
