Washington Manassas Airport Gets $1.1 Million Grant For New Control Tower

The governor of Virginia announced funding for dozens of the state's airports, including Washington Manassas Airport.

MANASSAS, VA – Washington Manassas Airport will get more than $1 million for a new control tower as part of a new tranche of funding from Virginia's Aviation Board.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger on Friday announced nearly $40 million in funding for 65 of the state's public-use airports. "Airports are essential engines of economic growth, connecting Virginians to new opportunities, supporting businesses, and helping attract investment and jobs across the Commonwealth," she said in a release announcing the funding. "These new Commonwealth Aviation Fund investments will strengthen airports in every corner of Virginia, making sure they have the modern infrastructure and resources to keep growing and serving Virginians."

The release noted that earlier this year, Virginia changed the allocation formula for its Commonwealth Aviation Fund for the first time since the fund's creation in 1986. The updated approach directs more resources to airports with greater capital needs while preserving a funding baseline for the state's smaller, General Aviation airports, Spanberger's office said.

Washington Manassas Airport, which was recently cleared for commercial flights, will receive nearly $1.1 million for a new air traffic control tower. The airport expects to begin serving commercial passengers in late 2027.

The funding included $24.6 million for commercial service airports; $11.9 million for regional business airports, Washington Manassas Airport's category; and $3.1 million for community business and local service airports.
