PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., will visit Manassas and Dumfries on Tuesday to highlight nearly $28 million in federal funding for a new air traffic control tower and services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Kaine will first attend a groundbreaking ceremony for a new air traffic control tower at Washington Manassas Regional Airport. The project received $26 million in federal funding announced in May by Kaine and fellow Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.
The funding will help relocate and construct a new tower to replace the airport's existing 82-year-old facility.
The Manassas project was among three Virginia airport improvements awarded a combined $73.6 million in federal funding in May.
The control tower project got another $1 million in funding from the state of Virginia in September.
Following the groundbreaking, Kaine will travel to Dumfries to tour Action in Community Through Service (ACTS), a nonprofit organization that assists Prince William County residents in need.
During the visit, Kaine will highlight $1.78 million in federal funding secured through the congressional appropriations process to support people who have experienced or are fleeing domestic violence and sexual assault.
The funding will help ACTS provide temporary housing, counseling, legal assistance and case management to survivors.
The money was secured through the Congressionally Directed Spending process, which allows senators to request federal funding for specific projects in their states.
