MANASSAS PARK, VA — State Del. Michelle Maldonado (D-Manassas Park) announced her resignation from the Virginia House of Delegates on Monday, effective May 31.
In a formal letter addressed to House Speaker Don Scott, Maldonado stated that representing the 20th District has been a "profound honor."
"Their trust and confidence have been the foundation of my work in this chamber, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to represent them," Maldonado wrote.
Maldonado, who was first elected to the chamber in 2021, currently serves on the House committees for Courts of Justice, Finance, Labor and Commerce, and Communications, Technology and Innovation.
The Prince William Times reported that Maldonado is stepping down to focus on her campaign for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Her departure will necessitate a special election to fill the remainder of her term, though a date for that election has not yet been determined.
In a post to her official X account, Maldonado expressed gratitude to local voters and colleagues.
"Serving the people of District 20 has been the honor of a lifetime," Maldonado said. "I thank our community, voters, partners, volunteers, and fellow legislators and electeds for their trust in me & for their dedication to Virginians."
In her resignation letter, Maldonado also thanked fellow legislators and community partners, noting that her departure is "bittersweet" but made with "confidence in [the institution's] continued service to the people of the Commonwealth."
