MCLEAN, VA — Many government offices, schools, transit services and community facilities in and around McLean will be closed or operating on modified schedules for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25.
Fairfax County says government offices are closed that day in observance of Memorial Day, the federal holiday honoring U.S. military members who died in service.
Below are the changes to know around McLean:
Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.
McLean Community Center: The McLean Community Center will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. The center will resume regular business hours Tuesday, May 26.
McLean Community Center programs, classes and rentals: MCC’s main facility at 1234 Ingleside Ave. is closed all day Monday, so residents should not plan on regular in-person access to MCC classes, rentals or programs that day. MCC says it offers classes, lectures, camps, performing arts, live music, specialty shows and other community programs at the center.
The Alden Theatre and Old Firehouse Center: The Alden Theatre, part of MCC, is normally open during performances only and lists Memorial Day among its closure days. The Old Firehouse Center, MCC’s teen facility at 1440 Chain Bridge Road, also lists Memorial Day among its closure days.
Fairfax County Public Schools: The FCPS calendar lists Monday, May 25, as the Memorial Day holiday. Tuesday, May 26, is listed as a student holiday and teacher workday, and Wednesday, May 27, is listed as a holiday for Eid al-Adha.
Courts: Fairfax Circuit Court is closed Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court also lists May 25 as “Memorial Day — Court Closed.”
Elections: There is no Memorial Day early-voting closure to note for 2026. The Virginia Department of Elections says the 2026 primary election will be held Aug. 4, with early in-person voting beginning June 19; registrar offices closed for Juneteenth will begin early in-person voting June 18.
Permitting and inspections: Fairfax County permitting, zoning and land-use offices are closed with county government offices Monday, May 25. The county’s PLUS system remains available online for customers to submit applications, pay fees, track application status and receive electronic notifications.
Libraries: Fairfax County Public Library locations are closed Monday, May 25. Library apps and online services remain available.
Trash pickup and recycling: For Fairfax County collection customers, trash and recycling collection will operate on the regular Monday schedule. The county’s administrative office will be closed Monday, May 25, and will reopen Tuesday, May 26. The I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will be open; private collection customers should check directly with their hauler.
Virginia DMV: All Virginia DMV offices, the Customer Contact Center and social media customer service will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. DMV says more than 50 services remain available online 24/7.
Post offices: U.S. Postal Service Post Office locations will be closed Monday, May 25. Regular mail delivery and retail services resume Tuesday, May 26; USPS says online services and select self-service kiosks remain available.
Metrorail and Metrobus: On Monday, May 25, Metrorail will operate on weekend service frequency from 6 a.m. to midnight. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule.
Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector buses will operate on a Sunday service schedule Monday, May 25. Routes not listed as Sunday-service routes will not provide service on Memorial Day. Fairfax Connector Transit Stores and the Customer Service Call Center will be closed.
Parks and recreation: Fairfax County Park Authority says veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families will receive complimentary access to select park amenities and activities on Memorial Day, including rec center access with pools, fitness rooms, gyms, courts and drop-in fitness classes. Valid military identification is required.
