FAIRFAX, VA — The Fairfax County Park Authority has canceled Thursday evening's Evening on the Ellipse concert because of dangerous heat conditions forecast for the area as Fairfax County continues operating under its activated heat plan.
In an announcement Thursday, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay said the July 2 performance was canceled in response to the .
The weekly concert series, part of the Fairfax County Park Authority's free Summer Entertainment Series, was canceled to help protect attendees, performers, volunteers and staff, according to the announcement.
"While I know many residents look forward to this popular event as part of the Fairfax County Park Authority's free Summer Entertainment Series, public safety must always come first during periods of dangerous heat," McKay said.
Fairfax County activated its heat plan beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, and it is scheduled to remain in effect through Friday, July 3. During that time, libraries and community centers are serving as cooling centers during their normal operating hours for people seeking relief from the heat.
Because county government offices are closed Friday for the Independence Day holiday, most county facilities that normally serve as cooling centers will not be available that day. However, Fairfax County Rec Centers will remain open with limited hours to provide cooling options for residents.
County officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and check on older adults, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Residents can also report concerns about people or pets affected by the heat by calling 703-691-2131.
The Park Authority expects the Evening on the Ellipse series to resume next Thursday as scheduled. Additional information about future performances and county heat resources is available through the Fairfax County Park Authority and Fairfax County.
