MCLEAN, VA — Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the unofficial end of summer, giving families one more opportunity for a trip, backyard barbecue or visit to the pool before fall arrives.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Fairfax County government offices and numerous other public facilities will be closed, while transit and some recreation facilities will operate on modified schedules.
Fairfax County Public Schools students will have an extended holiday weekend, with Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, designated as holidays for Labor Day break.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Schools are closed Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day break.
McLean Community Center: The McLean Community Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day.
Courts: Fairfax County Circuit Court will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day. Labor Day is also a state court holiday.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday, Sept. 7. Many transactions, including driver's license and ID renewals, vehicle registration renewals and address changes, can be completed online.
Fairfax Connector: Buses will operate on a Sunday service schedule Monday. Routes operating are 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 630, 651, 662, 672, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983 and RIBS 1 through RIBS 5. Routes not on the list will not operate.
Fairfax Connector Transit Stores and the Connector Customer Service Call Center will also be closed Monday.
Fairfax County Public Library: All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be closed Monday, Sept. 7.
Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on regular Sunday schedules. Metrorail will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight. Regular fares will be in effect, and parking at Metro-owned garages and lots will be free for Metro riders.
MetroAccess subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday. Customers who need MetroAccess service Monday should make a separate reservation.
Fairfax County Park Authority: Recreation centers will be open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The George Washington Rec Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Closer to McLean, the carousel at Clemyjontri Park will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Riverbend Park's visitor center will be open from noon to 5 p.m.
Fairfax County historic sites, including Colvin Run Mill, will be closed. Nature centers and Green Spring Gardens' Horticultural Center and Historic House will also be closed.
Trash and recycling: Fairfax County government trash and recycling collection will operate on its regular Monday schedule. Residents who receive service from a private trash hauler should contact their provider about possible schedule changes.
The recycling and disposal centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will be open Monday. Fairfax County's trash and recycling administrative office will be closed and reopen at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Post offices: All U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed Monday, and regular mail will not be delivered. Regular mail delivery and retail services will resume Tuesday, Sept. 8. Some self-service and online postal services will remain available.
