MOUNT VERNON, VA — A massive fire tore through a Mount Vernon home late Thursday, causing part of the structure to collapse, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters responded to the area of Fordson Road and Douglas Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. after multiple callers reported heavy fire and black smoke, with flames coming through the roof.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire throughout both floors of the two-story home. Firefighters initially tried to enter the house but were forced to fight the blaze from outside after part of the second floor and front porch collapsed.
Additional crews were called to the scene as firefighters attacked the flames, protected a neighboring house and cooled a fuel oil tank behind the burning home.
No one was home when the fire started, and no firefighters or civilians were injured.
The visible flames have been extinguished, but crews remained at the scene to check for hot spots and secure the property. Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
