Newport News Public Schools makes major gains on Standards of Learning assessments (wavy.com) — Newport News Public Schools just posted strong gains on this year's SOL tests, with higher pass rates in math, reading, science, and social studies across all grade levels. Division leaders say a focus on attendance and instructional changes is paying off, and they expect more local schools to earn higher state performance designations when updated ratings come out later this year.
2. New I-64 interchange is coming to Denbigh Boulevard, bringing road closures (dailypress.com) — Construction is starting this month on a new I-64 interchange at Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News, bringing years of lane shifts and a long-term closure of the connector between Pagewood Drive and Denbigh Boulevard Service Road. The multi-phase project will add new ramps, widen I-64 and Denbigh, and rework intersections at Warwick and Jefferson to improve safety and reduce congestion.
3. Newport News police searching for suspect in fatal April hit-and-run (13newsnow.com) — Newport News police are still searching for 42-year-old Antonio Jamar Wilson, charged in an April hit-and-run at Davis Park Drive and Jefferson Avenue that fatally injured a woman. Investigators are asking anyone who knows where he might be to contact the Crime Line, keeping this case very much active for residents across the city.
4. James City cuts Flock data retention period (williamsburgindependent.com) — Newport News police currently operate 153 Flock license-plate cameras, keeping captured data for the full 21 days allowed under Virginia law, unlike James City County, which just cut retention to 14 days. The piece compares recent scan volumes, hotlist hits, and search activity across Newport News, Williamsburg, York County, and William & Mary, highlighting how heavily these systems are now used regionally.
5. Navy has lost 15,000 operational days because of idle submarines, GAO reports (stripes.com) — Newport News Shipbuilding is highlighted as one of the key yards that could help ease a massive submarine maintenance backlog that has cost the Navy 15,000 operational days and billions of dollars. A new GAO report details how delays at public and private shipyards, including the Newport News facility, are sidelining attack submarines and driving up costs.
