Investigators say he's charged with felony hit-and-run causing death and may still be in the area, and tipsters can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
2. Boy, 7, falls asleep on school bus, wakes up in bus barn alone (centralillinoisproud.com) — A Newport News first-grader says he fell asleep on his school bus, woke up alone in a bus lot, and had to let himself out before two strangers found him and brought him home. Newport News Public Schools confirms it's investigating, has removed the driver from duty, and notified Child Protective Services, while the child's grandmother questions whether it's safe to send him back.
3. Virginia prepares to begin long-awaited air study near Norfolk, Newport News coal terminals (pilotonline.com) — State environmental officials are finally moving ahead with a detailed air-quality study around coal terminals serving Newport News' Southeast Community, installing monitors at An Achievable Dream Tennis Center and 31st Street and Wickham Avenue. Over 16 months, the stations will test for fine particulates and toxic metals like arsenic and lead, responding to long-standing neighborhood concerns about coal dust and asthma rates.
4. The World's Largest Aircraft Carrier Worth $13.2B Is Finally Nearing Completion (motorbiscuit.com) — Work at Newport News Shipbuilding is bringing the $13.2 billion USS John F. Kennedy closer to joining the Navy, after the carrier recently completed key acceptance sea trials off the Virginia coast. Local shipbuilders and Navy crews are now finishing weapons elevators, inspections, and outfitting, with delivery targeted for spring 2027, underscoring Newport News' central role in U.S. carrier construction.
