2. Hunton YMCA breaks ground on new Norfolk home after three years in temporary space (wvtf.org) — Norfolk's William A. Hunton YMCA has broken ground on a new early childhood and youth facility at Tidewater Drive and Brambleton Avenue, returning the 151-year-old institution to its original neighborhood. Backed by more than $16 million raised so far, including over $6 million from the city, the center will eventually serve 300 children daily and add a gym and pool in later phases.
3. 2 students shot at high school parking lot in Norfolk, Virginia (bnonews.com) — Families in Norfolk should know that two 16-year-old Norview High School students were shot Wednesday afternoon in the school's parking lot during dismissal, one with life-threatening injuries. Police say a dispute with other juveniles led to four to six shots being fired, and investigators have video and believe they know who they're looking for as they work to quickly contact those involved.
4. Virginia invests $1 million in program helping SNAP recipients stretch food budgets (wtkr.com) — From Norfolk Fresh Match has secured $1 million in state funding to help SNAP users double their dollars on fruits and vegetables at participating markets. With food insecurity rising and federal rules tightening, organizers say the expansion will be crucial for Norfolk and other Virginia families trying to keep healthy food on the table.
5. Norfolk Naval Shipyard Celebrated 140 Graduates at Annual Apprentice Graduation and Awards Ceremony (navy.mil) — Norfolk residents may spot a new class of skilled tradespeople after 140 apprentices graduated from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard program at Harrison Opera House. The four-year program blends classroom work and hands-on training, and this year's class valedictorian, Victoria Cutchin, is the first from her shop in over two decades, underscoring the shipyard's long-term investment in the local workforce and Navy readiness.
