Expect temporary closures during construction, mostly wrapping up by December, and watch for a November bond referendum that could fund even more improvements to parks, trails, and playgrounds across Fairfax County.
• Kiss-and-ride congestion a growing safety concern at Fairfax County schools, report finds (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax County Public Schools' new Safe Routes assessment flags kiss-and-ride congestion as a major safety concern, with Oakton Elementary among nine schools prioritized for targeted help. Staff and school board members describe dangerous drop-off behavior and call for better traffic patterns, infrastructure, and staffing so more students can safely walk or ride the bus instead of relying on long car lines.
• FCPS Student Killed In Fairfax City Crash As Reid Issues Safety Plea (patch.com) — A Fairfax City crash that killed a 13-year-old FCPS student has prompted Superintendent Michelle Reid to urge extra caution from drivers, walkers, and cyclists. In response to recent incidents, Fairfax County is restoring crossing guards and police at 11 high school locations, including Oakton High School, while longer-term pedestrian safety improvements are evaluated.
