Alexandria Named A Top U.S. City For Remote Working: Study

Alexandria ranked among other U.S. cities in the top 10 cities for remote workers based on the economy, connectivity and more categories.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria is one of the best environments for remote working in the U.S., according to a new study from Coworking Cafe.

Coworking Cafe, a resource to find coworking spaces, analyzed 215 cities with 12 key metrics in the categories of remote work, economy, connectivity and infrastructure. Alexandria ranked ninth in the U.S. as the study found the city has a combination of high earnings, a stable job market, and a strong coworking scene.

"Although remote work allows people to work from virtually anywhere, not all locations are equally suited to support it," the Coworking Cafe study said. "Specifically, going into 2026, an ideal city for telecommuting combines reliable digital infrastructure, a flexible work culture, and a lifestyle that encourages both productivity and well-being to ensure a perfect balance between one’s professional and personal lives."

As an alternative to traditional offices, some workers may utilize flexible working spaces as needed. The study noted Alexandria has 29 coworking spaces, which equates to 18.5 per 100,000 residents and the fourth-highest density.

While the city has high costs of living, the study notes that is partly offset by the fifth-highest median income — $85,383. Alexandria's unemployment was reported to be the fifth-lowest at 1.6 percent. However, unemployment rates came from 2024 before federal worker reductions were happening.

Other highlights for Alexandria include proximity to two airports, walkability, public Wi-Fi offerings and plentiful cultural and leisure offerings.

Nationwide, Atlanta ranked first in the study due to its strong digital infrastructure and coworking scene and balanced cost of living. Frisco, Texas, followed in second due to its high share of remote workers and strong local economy. Boulder, Colorado came in third for its strong connectivity, public Wi-Fi coverage, and vibrant work-life balance.
