ALEXANDRIA, VA – Construction on the Alexandria Railway Station and the King and Commonwealth bridge has been delayed and a new weekend of work added, the Virginia Railway Express announced.

"A work window previously scheduled for May 15-May 18 has been postponed to the following weekend, with an additional work weekend proposed for June 11-15," the rail service said.

The weekend after May 15-18 is Memorial Day weekend.

Weekend work throughout the month was scheduled to run over three weekends from Friday evenings at 7 p.m. to Monday at 10 p.m., with track restored by Tuesday at 5 a.m.

Now, according to VRE, that work will be done over four weekends, with three to come: May 22-25, May 28 to June 1, and tentatively from June 11-15.

One weekend of work has already been completed.

While the work is done, King Street will be closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road, with traffic routed to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open with a single travel lane of alternating traffic directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will remain open to local traffic only, the city reported when the construction was announced.

Also during construction, the sidewalk connecting King Street to the station tunnel will be closed on both sides under the bridge during these times, but the sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue will remain open, with signs pointing out detours.

Pedestrian detour options are listed here.

The government of Alexandria also provides more details on road closures here.
