Severe storms and flooding are possible on Wednesday as parts of Northern Virginia face the ninth consecutive day of measurable rain, according to the latest forecasts.
A stalled front over southern Virginia is expected to move north on Wednesday afternoon and will produce at least a couple of rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the D.C. region, the National Weather Service wrote.
According to forecasts, scattered showers are likely on Wednesday morning, followed by scattered midafternoon thunderstorms that could last into the early evening hours.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has maintained a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5) of severe weather for south of the Potomac River, including D.C. and southern Maryland, with a Marginal
Risk (level 1 of 5) to the north.
Damaging wind gusts will likely be the primary threat from any severe thunderstorms that develop today. Some spots could also see an inch or more of rain in just an hour or two, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.
Given the saturated ground conditions from days of rain, Wednesday's rainfall could produce instances of flooding.
By late evening, the majority of thunderstorms will move out of the region, with some residual showers and storms lingering into the early part of the night.
By Thursday, drier air moves into the region, and conditions will likely be partly to mostly sunny and dry through the weekend, with highs mainly in the 70s.
