Major Alexandria Thoroughfare Closed After Caustic Substance Spill: Fire Department

Duke Street was closed Monday morning after a substance determined to be caustic was spilled there.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Duke Street was partially closed Monday morning after a potentially hazardous material was spilled there.

The Alexandria Fire Department reports that it responded to a hazardous materials incident at 8:09 a.m. on the 5300 block of Duke Street, where an unknown white powder was found.

According to the fire department, the substance is caustic, but it has not yet been identified. The source of the spill also hasn’t been revealed by Alexandria police or fire authorities. ALX Now reports that the emergency services call alerting authorities to the incident was for a white powder substance falling from a truck.

Duke Street was closed to westbound traffic between S. Pickett Street and N. Paxton Street. As of noon, authorities had not announced its reopening.
