ALEXANDRIA, VA – Independent Alexandria stationery store Penny Post is gearing up for its fifth annual Stationery Store Day on Saturday.
Penny Post's owner, Amy Rutherford, says it's the store's favorite day of the year. In a press release, she said, "It's a chance to say thank you to the community that keeps handwritten notes, fountain pens, and beautiful paper alive."
Penny Post's thank you is a day-long, in-store bash including gifts with purchase; raffles; limited-edition merchandise; and live entertainment, drinks and snacks for folks waiting in the anticipated line.
The indie shop says it will be offering two tiers of free gifts with purchase, while supplies last, of course. The first 100 customers who spend $50 or more will get a gift package stuffed with stationery goodies, including pens, stickers and cards, valued at $50 or more. Customers who spend $175 or more get all of that plus a Pilot Explorer fountain pen with cartridges and a dose of Japanese paper. The store will also raffle off stationery-inspired prizes.
The party runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. August 1 and the line will form at the store's entrance on the corner of Fayette and King Streets. The Penny Post team and neighbor Ms. Moxie's Moon Shop promise to keep those waiting refreshed and in good spirits.
Penny Post is an independent stationery store that has served Alexandria since 2017. Stationery Store Day was launched in 2022 by Kristina Burkey, owner of the Caliope stationery store in Massachusetts. Launched in the spirit of Record Store Day or Independent Book Store Day, it's an opportunity for neighbors to remember independent, brick-and-mortar shops in their communities.
