ALEXANDRIA, VA — A literary-inspired ice cream company launched last year by the owner of Old Town Books is eyeing its own brick-and-mortar location in Fort Hunt next year.
Fabled Ice Cream plans to open at 7940 Fort Hunt Road in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center in 2027. The small-batch ice cream business says it's just beginning to plan its build-out.
Fabled Ice Cream has been selling its literary treats out of sister business Old Town Books in limited-edition pints, with new flavors released periodically. The company also caters.
Ally Kirkpatrick, proprietor of Old Town Books and now dairy queen, tells Patch that following the pop-up business model, as she did with her bookstore, allowed her to learn the ropes of production and food business before committing to a permanent location.
Currently, customers can order pints through Hotplate and pick them up inside Old Town Books at 130 Royal Street in Alexandria. Fabled will also appear at the Mount Vernon Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 26, Sept. 23, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18.
"Popping up with Fabled has shown me I just LOVE making ice cream," Kirkpatrick said. "Both feed my soul, and I hope those of our community too!"
