ALEXANDRIA, VA — Drivers passing several Alexandria schools will again need to watch their speed starting Monday, when the city resumes school-zone camera enforcement on the first day of classes.
The cameras enforce a 15-mph speed limit when the school zone lights are flashing. According to the city, violations can result in fines of up to $100.
Ahead of enforcement, Alexandria tested its school zone flashers and cameras Friday during normal weekday hours. Drivers may see the lights operating, but no citations will be issued during testing.
Cameras will resume enforcement Monday at six school zones:
Each camera zone stretches about a quarter-mile, with signs marking where enforcement begins and ends.
The cameras use radar to record suspected speeding violations. A sworn law enforcement officer must verify a violation before a citation is mailed to the vehicle's owner, lessee or renter.
Additionally, officials said drivers should be aware of midday enforcement near both Alexandria City High School campuses while students travel between the King Street and Minnie Howard locations.
