Alexandria City Hall Reopening Delayed Until Fall 2028: Report

Unexpected asbestos pushed back the start of the Alexandria City Hall renovation by 10 weeks, delaying its completion to fall 2028.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City Hall is now expected to reopen in fall 2028 after unexpected asbestos removal delayed the start of its renovation by 10 weeks, according to an ALXnow report.

Crews spent the past six months removing asbestos and other hazardous materials from the building at 301 King St. Additional asbestos was discovered in the south facade of a 1960s-era addition and in the east and west interior courtyards, according to the report.

With that work complete, crews plan to begin dismantling the addition in September. Residents should expect increased truck traffic, construction noise, continued fencing and pedestrian detours around the property.
