ALEXANDRIA, VA – Mobius Records will open its new Del Ray location on Saturday with a party promising a DJ, giveaways and more.
The new shop at 2016 Mount Vernon Avenue will be a sister to Mobius Records in Fairfax, which opened in 2014. It's a collaboration with Neighborhood Restaurant Group, the organization behind dozens of local restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops and more. The group announced that it wanted to open a record store in Del Ray in June, the Alexandria Brief and others reported.
Dempsey Hamilton of Mobius Records tells Patch the Del Ray location will be more than just a record shop. "With the Alexandria shop, NRG gives us an opportunity to book shows, have listening parties and beyond, it really is a game changer!" Some things will stay the same, though: he promises "Same friendly vibe and customer-focused shop!"
Hamilton says Mobius Records has been dreaming of expanding for a decade now. Having partnered with NRG regularly over the years, "it just made sense to further that partnership into a physical store," he said.
Mobius Records ALX will join longstanding Alexandria record shop Crooked Beat, which announced its return to Del Ray in June following a flood at its previous location. The two will be across the street from each other. Crooked Beat has yet to announce its opening date, but has recently posted on social media anticipating a mid-September launch.
