Summerlike heat and humidity returned to Northern Virginia on Thursday, along with a chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms before temperatures cool heading into the weekend.
Highs are expected to reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees across the Washington region. The National Weather Service said storms developing farther west should move toward the Interstate 95 corridor, with the best chance for storms in Northern Virginia between about 4 and 9 p.m.
Widespread severe weather is not expected, but some storms could bring brief heavy rain and gusty winds. Most activity should taper off during the evening.
Capital Weather said the combination of heat and humidity could make it feel like the low to mid-90s in some areas Thursday. A cold front will move through by Friday, bringing lower humidity, mostly sunny skies and highs generally in the low to mid-80s.
Saturday should be the cooler day of the weekend, with Northern Virginia highs around 80 degrees and mainly dry conditions, although a stray shower is possible.
Warmer and more humid weather returns Sunday, when highs should climb into the mid-80s. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely during the afternoon and evening, with unsettled weather potentially continuing into early next week.
