ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria's Traffic and Parking Board will decide Monday on whether to restrict right turns on red lights at every intersection in Old Town.
The staff recommendation is that the city ban right turns on red lights at every signalized intersection from the area bounded by First Street to the north, the City boundary to the south, Telegraph Road and the railroad tracks to the west and the Potomac River to the east, as well at the intersections of Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road and Quaker Lane/Janney's Lane/Seminary Road.
Staff cites traffic accidents and particularly pedestrian fatalities as the reason for the restrictions, saying the vast majority of pedestrian crashes involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians when turning left or when turning right on a red light.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday. The docket can be found here. Information on how to attend the meeting can be found here. Members of the public can speak at the meeting and written comments can be sent by email to the parking board until noon on Monday.
