ALEXANDRIA, VA – A Del Ray woman is seeking help from her community after she says a driver ran over her leashed dog and nearly hit her on Friday.
In a Facebook post, Amanda Trotenbrg Campbell told a Del Ray community group that as she was walking her dog on a leash on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., a red sedan came speeding into the intersection of Commonwealth and Del Ray Avenue and hit her dog, nearly hitting her in the process. The driver then drove over her dog and sped away.
"We are looking for any neighbors that may have camera footage," Campbell wrote. "An amazing cyclist neighbor raced to catch the driver and was able to snap a picture and see their route. The car took off down Rosecrest and then went southbound on Russell Road."
Campbell, who says she's eight months pregnant, said she was lucky to emerge unscathed from the incident. She also said her pup, Asher, came through the ordeal with broken bones and bruising, but survived.
"If you live in that area and have camera footage, it would be greatly appreciated!" she wrote.
Campbell posted in a followed-up to her original comment that Asher is recovering.
An Alexandria Animal Control officer told Patch that their department is currently investigating the report. The lookout is for a mid-2000s red sedan that fled the scene traveling southbound on Commonwealth Avenue, through Rosecrest Avenue to southbound on Russell Road. The department says it has surveyed the area for surveillance footage and is asking residents to review their security cameras.
Anyone who has information about the incident or who has home cameras on the streets of travel is urged to call (703) 746-6000 or email animalservices@alexandriaanimals.org
