Petersburg woman charged in East Washington Street fatal hit-and-run (wtvr.com) β A Petersburg woman has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony hit-and-run after a man was found dead on East Washington Street near a city building and railroad tracks. Police say the victim was left in the roadway without help, and officers later located an abandoned, damaged vehicle on Banks Street. Investigators are still seeking tips from anyone who saw anything in the area.

Christian groups sue Virginia State University over new campus ministry policy (nbc12.com) β In Petersburg, two national Christian ministries are suing Virginia State University in federal court, claiming a new campus ministry policy unfairly restricts their student chapters and violates First Amendment rights. The groups say they lost registered student organization status, must route activities through the campus minister, and no longer receive Sunday church transportation. VSU has not yet filed a formal response to the lawsuit.

The article recalls its fierce bombardments in 1865 and explains how the preserved battlefield and museum later declined, leading the longtime owners to sell the land and level the trenches in the 1960s.
