• Portsmouth voters will get to decide on 1% sales tax for school construction/capital projects (wavy.com) — Portsmouth voters will decide this November whether to add a 1% local sales and use tax dedicated solely to school construction and major renovations. School leaders say the measure could generate about $10 million annually, funding projects like a new K-8 middle school, a new Churchland Middle, and critical roof and HVAC upgrades without touching salaries or classroom materials.
• Man who shot at Portsmouth officers, disabled cameras sentenced to 8 years in prison (wtkr.com) — A man who fired at Portsmouth police officers and shot out downtown crowd-monitoring cameras in 2024 has been sentenced to eight years in prison. The incident happened near Queen and Washington streets by a United Methodist Church, and officers later recovered an assault rifle, shotgun, and evidence of bullets striking a patrol car, homes, and a church.
• Portsmouth nonprofit Mercy Chefs responds to Nepal flooding, distributes 40,000 meals (wtkr.com) — A Portsmouth-based nonprofit, Mercy Chefs, is in Nepal right now serving more than 40,000 meals to residents devastated by recent flash flooding. Founder Gary LeBlanc says the team is reaching isolated communities by helicopter, often as the first outside relief workers people have seen, and plans to rotate staff while maintaining a long-term presence.
