Portsmouth Redevelopment Housing Authority plans $30 million senior housing complex (wtkr.com) — Portsmouth seniors could see 82 new affordable apartments as the Redevelopment Housing Authority moves forward with the $30 million Twin Pines Senior Housing project on Twin Pines Road, now permitted by City Council. Construction is expected to start in early 2027 and finish in about 18 months, with income-based rents and amenities like a community room, art room, dog park, and exercise space.
   

2. Man pleads guilty after shooting at police cruiser in 2024; sentenced to 8 years (wavy.com) — In Portsmouth, a man who fired at an occupied police cruiser on High Street in 2024 has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felonies. Prosecutors say no one was hurt, but the shots struck the marked vehicle, and he'll face five additional years of supervised probation after release.
   

3. Two Old Dominion University Students Make Top 50 Virginia Interns List (odu.edu) — A Portsmouth-raised Old Dominion University senior has been named one of Virginia's Top 50 Interns, spotlighting both his IT work and experience with the Portsmouth Schools Foundation. Alongside a fellow ODU student from Norfolk, he was honored in Richmond for leadership, initiative, and real-world impact in internships that are helping launch their careers.
   

4. 'Heartbreaking:' Mercy Chefs describes destruction and resiliency in Nepal (wavy.com) — Portsmouth-based Mercy Chefs has deployed teams to flood-ravaged areas of Nepal, where they're distributing month-long grocery packs to families who lost homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. Leaders describe heartbreaking scenes, but also resilience, as they work to reach remote communities by road and helicopter and invite donations to sustain their relief efforts.
   

5. VDH warns of rising heat-related illnesses across Eastern Virginia (wavy.com) — Portsmouth residents are being urged to take the heat seriously as Eastern Virginia sees a spike in heat-related emergency room visits, far above the usual summer average. Health officials recommend loose clothing, plenty of water, and quick action if someone shows signs of heat illness, stressing that even healthy adults in their 20s to 40s are at risk.
