📰 News we're reading

1. New affordable housing for seniors coming to Portsmouth by 2028 (pilotonline.com) — Portsmouth seniors could see 82 new affordable apartments on Twin Pines Road by late 2028, with rents capped at 30% of income for voucher holders. City Council recently approved an updated permit after financing delays, and demand is expected to be high, mirroring the fully subscribed Lexington Reserve community.

2. Portsmouth's Park View Elementary showcases reading program and learning initiatives to state officials (wtkr.com) — Portsmouth families get a closer look at how Park View Elementary is improving early reading, with state education leaders touring classrooms and praising local programs. The visit highlighted the Elevate Early Education initiative, dual language immersion, and support for military-connected students, while Portsmouth school leaders pressed for continued state investment to sustain these gains.

3. A nature park transformed from landfill to 'Paradise' (chesapeakebay.net) — Portsmouth residents have a reclaimed gem in Paradise Creek Nature Park, a former industrial dump turned 40-acre haven of trails, wetlands, and easy kayak access. The park now offers birdwatching, environmental education programs, and Youth Conservation Internships, giving local students and families a nearby escape to learn about and enjoy the Elizabeth River.

4. Office for Civil Rights' Restraint and Seclusion Oversight of Virginia's Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs Stretched Almost Nine Years (specialeducationaction.com) — Portsmouth families with students in regional special education should know that SECEP, which includes Portsmouth Public Schools, has been under federal civil-rights scrutiny over restraint and seclusion practices for nearly nine years. A recent resolution agreement with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights aims to address concerns about how students with disabilities are treated.

5. A second round of letters notifies individuals that their calls with Sen. Louise Lucas were tapped (virginiascope.com) — Portsmouth's own Sen. Louise Lucas is again at the center of a federal investigation, as the FBI and Justice Department notify Virginia political figures that their calls with her were wiretapped this spring. The FBI also raided her Portsmouth offices in May, though investigators have not disclosed details while Lucas continues leading key state budget negotiations.
