1. Man sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty to murdering two in Portsmouth shooting (pilotonline.com) — A man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting two men during a 2024 encounter on Lancer Drive in Portsmouth, bringing some closure to grieving families. The case, handled in Portsmouth's Circuit Court, detailed how the victims were ambushed after meeting the shooter in a neighborhood parking lot.
2. In rare move, SCC orders three in-person hearings for NextEra-Dominion merger case • Virginia Mercury (virginiamercury.com) — Virginia regulators are expanding public input on the massive proposed NextEra–Dominion merger, adding three in-person hearings to previously scheduled phone testimony. For Portsmouth residents, House Speaker Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, is pressing regulators with concerns about the deal, which could affect electric customers across Dominion's service area, including your household.
3. FBI Alerts on Lucas Probe: Intercepted Congressman Calls (dailysignal.com) — Federal investigators have twice monitored calls involving state Sen. Louise Lucas and earlier this year raided her political office and nearby cannabis dispensary in Portsmouth as part of an ongoing corruption probe. While no charges have been filed, the FBI's sealed recordings and continued questions from lawmakers keep the investigation—and its local political and business implications—very much alive.
4. Virginia rolls out new chip-and-tap EBT cards to prevent theft (wavy.com) — Portsmouth SNAP recipients are among the first Virginians getting new chip-and-tap EBT cards designed to stop thieves from skimming food benefits. The state will automatically mail upgraded cards to affected households, who must activate them, set a PIN, and keep addresses current as old magnetic-stripe cards deactivate 60 days after mailing.
