1. Virginia begins issuing chip-enabled SNAP EBT cards (nbc29.com) — If you use SNAP in Portsmouth, expect a new chip-enabled EBT card by October 1 as part of Virginia's pilot rollout to fight skimming theft. Your benefits and payment schedule won't change, but your old card will deactivate 60 days after the new one is mailed, so be sure your contact information is current and activate the replacement quickly.
   

2. Portsmouth men opening mental health clinic focused on expanding access to Black therapists (wtkr.com) — A new mental health clinic, Inspire You Counseling, is opening Sept. 28 on Crawford Street in Portsmouth, aiming to expand access to Black therapists, especially for Black men. Co-founders and Portsmouth natives George DeGroat and Geravis Brown are drawing on their own experiences with trauma and depression to offer more culturally responsive care across Portsmouth and Hampton Roads.
   

3. Portsmouth food pantry running critically low on donations (wavy.com) — Portsmouth's Department of Social Services food pantry is nearly empty, just as more residents—especially those facing stolen SNAP benefits and homelessness—are turning to it for help. The city is urging locals to donate non-expired, sealed food or money, either directly at the DSS office on weekdays or through nonprofit RESET Inc.'s four-week food drive.
   

4. Navy veteran brings back military boxing to Hampton Roads with West Point vs. Naval Academy bout (wtkr.com) — A Navy veteran from Portsmouth is helping bring back a long-lost military boxing tradition with a major West Point vs. Naval Academy bout in Williamsburg this December. The event, organized with Brikhouse Boxing, will be streamed to bases worldwide and is billed as one of Hampton Roads' biggest military sporting showcases in years, celebrating the region's deep armed forces roots.
   

5. Gladys Knight is still touring — her son fears it will end with her death (newstribune.com) — Gladys Knight's current tour schedule includes a stop in Portsmouth on October 9, even as her son publicly worries she's being pushed to keep performing despite health concerns. The 82-year-old singer's husband and manager says she wants to stay on the road, while family members question whether her schedule should be scaled back.
